Practice-Software Tip #7: Using Data to Differentiate Instruction

JumpRope provides several ways for teachers to sort and view data so they might differentiate instruction and assessment.

Using Data for Differentiated Instruction

It’s useful for teachers to spend time examining assignments students have submitted to note trends they see and consider strategies to address them. Teachers might see a group of students or a tendency among many students to skip reading directions or misunderstand a certain question, or they might see gaps in students’ conceptual understanding.

Being conscious of the many ways students can go astray is helpful. As our awareness increases, we can modify our approach, implement new instructional strategies, reteach content, or effectively group students, etc. to improve learning.

How does the JumpRope software support you in this process?

JumpRope includes features to streamline the data review process so teachers can more efficiently determine which students need support or extensions and in which areas.

The first screenshot pictured below shows performance data sorted according to target. The color-coding alone indicates student success with the targets. In this case, the data has been sorted by the target in the second column, “Is skilled at capitalizing the first word…,” so students who are struggling with that target have been sorted to the top of the column.

The teacher might offer some additional or varied instruction on capitalization to Yue Yan and Carol and follow up with an assessment designed for and administered to them specifically.

The second screenshot pictured below shows the display of data resulting from an additional assessment the teacher administered to Yue Yan. Note that since this assessment was designed specifically for and administered only to Yue Yan, the data appears in the teacher gradebook and the family portal for Yue Yan only.

JumpRope provides several ways for teachers to sort and view data so they might differentiate instruction and assessment. That differentiated assessment allows them to record and report student-specific data, which helps families focus only on the assessments and data relevant to their students.
